A career in nursing requires a lot of education and on-the-job experience. Nursing schools, located all over the country, are designed to give students both. NurseWeek has a listing of nursing schools, searchable by both state and nursing concentration. Even after becoming a nurse, there are still plenty of opportunities for continuing education. New medical techniques, standards, and technology require nurses to keep learning. Many courses are available online. Nursing Continuing Education and Nurse.com – Continuing Education both offer information about programs for nurses.
There are almost three million nurses in the United States. There are hundreds of nursing organizations committed to meeting the needs of nurses. Many of these organizations are for all nurses, such as the American Nurses Association. Most are specialized for nurses in specific fields or locations. A complete list of all nursing organizations can be found at Nurse.org—Nursing Organizations.
Nurses need to work within the guidelines of professional nursing ethics. Because of the sensitive nature of the job, dealing with matters of health, religion, death, care philosophy, and more, on a daily basis, it is important to both understand and follow strict ethical codes. Nursing Ethics, a Canadian site, has a lot of articles and other information on ethical standards in nursing. The American Code of Ethics for Nursing is available on Nursing World.
Nursing is not all hard work and strict guidelines. There are a lot of opportunities for laughter and joy. Nursing jokes and medical humor are as much a part of the job as needles and clipboards. The Nursing Humor webpage and Nurstoon- Nursing Cartoons feature hundreds of nursing jokes. Humor can brighten almost all shifts, making bad days a little easier to get through, which is important in a career like nursing.
Nurses are responsible for meeting the basic needs of the patients and assisting doctors. This might mean changing bandages, administering medicine, helping with births, or even helping during surgeries. Most patients see their doctors a couple times a day, but nurses are constantly in and out of patient rooms. They are the most important part of a healthcare system. There are many ways to show appreciation for a nurse. Nurses Direct and CyberNurse have gift ideas to say thank you to a special nurse. Nurses do a lot of hard work, and deserve to know that they are appreciated.
